3-D Exhibit at South Carolina Confederate Relic Room Print E-mail
Note: This exhibit ended on December 6, 2009

“World War I in 3D”, designed by the Center for Civil War Photography, opened on September 4, 2009 at the South Carolina Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum (SCCRRMM) in Columbia. The twenty-minute 3D show features more than eighty stereographs and gives viewers a great display of post-Civil War 3D photography. Stereoviews remained popular after the Civil War, and World War I was extensively photographed in 3D.

CCWP Director of Imaging John Richter selected the views from SCCRRMM’s 300 card Keystone World War I set for the show. Richter explains, “The views were selected not only for content but for a strong 3D effect.” Richter scanned the views, touched them up, converted them into anagylphs, and formatted them to match the resolution of the display screen. He then captioned each view using the original text from the period stereos. The views were then assembled in chronological order and sound effects, period music, and newly recorded music were added to provide the soundtrack. Richter says, “The soundtrack along with the 3D images gives it a ‘you are there’ experience. I don’t think you’ll see a more realistic display of World War I images anywhere else.”

The show was on display at the South Carolina Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum in Columbia, South Carolina from September 4, 2009 to December 6, 2009.
